Leander is a small town in the Texas Hill Country located about 25 miles northeast of Austin and about 60 miles southwest of Dallas. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Antonio-Brazos County, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Leander were members of the Spanish expedition that explored Texas in 1519-21. Captain Juan de Escobar arrived in what is now Leander on October 1, 1519 and named it after his hometown of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. From here he made several trips up the Trinity River before finally reaching San Antonio on July 26, 1526. The first permanent settler in Leander was Manuel Rodriguez who had come there with his family from Santa Anna Parish, Louisiana in 1835. He erected a log cabin which still stands today on the north side of Main Street near present day US 90/US 277 (now Loop 281). The community developed around this cabin until an early civil war destroyed it and most all evidence associated with it. A local legend has it that a bandit named “El Indio” robbed Rodriguez's cabin three times during Reconstruction; however no evidence exists to support this claim. In 1892 Wm Hite built a house on what is now US 290 just east of Main Street but never lived there as he sold his interest to Jno Fenton in 1895 for $1,500 cash only! An Adobe Walls House - dating back to 1890 - sits off IH-10W just west of mile marker 283 near milepost 456 southbound approaching FM 620 (the old CR 524 road). This large two story Adobe Walls style home was originally built by William Hite who traded goods with Indians at this location during Reconstruction days; later used as an office by Jno Fenton until 1970 when it became known as "An Adobe Walls House Museum" operated by Friends Of The Allen County Historical Society Incorporated under Program Number 001 . In 2006 much damage occurred due to storms which caused extensive rain & flooding including loss of roofing & windows; museum restored within 10 years! Leander Isolated During World War II On November 8th 1945 Headquarters Company 9th Infantry Regiment Combat Team received orders from Colonel Harry Eaker ordering them immediately forward into battle against overwhelming odds against Japanese forces retreating through Badwater Valley California destination Angels Camp California where they would be operating deep inside enemy territory adjacent To Japan proper! The commanding officer ordered his men not only fight hand-to-hand combat but also use whatever means necessary including water dumping techniques and suicide bombings if need be should their comrades become overwhelmed or surrendering too easily!!! As orders were given Company Commander LtCol John Sledge radioed headquarters reporting "We are going into action without any regard for human life!" Within minutes units came under fire from positions high up the mountain providing cover for their commanders as they descended upon Badwater Valley Operation Overlord began!!! company commander LtCol John Sledge's citation reads "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty while leading Company IX IX Infantry during operations along badwater valley campaign 1942-1945."
