Leander is a small town in theTX Panhandle located about an hour and a half north of Austin. It's known for its Angus cattle, horseback riding, and mountain biking. Leander's only outlet store is the local grocery store. The population was estimated at 5,000 in 2000, but has since declined to 4,500. The town was named after Commodore George Vancouver who explored Texas in 1799. In 1836, when Mexico ceded Texas to America as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, Leander became part of the new Mexican state of Coahuila y Tejas. By 1870 it had shrunk to just 153 people and by 1890 it had fallen below 300 people. In 1902-1903 Leland hosted what is now known as the world's first rodeo event called "The Lone Ranger Roundup". The event was held on Saturday night at Sam Houston Park with $10 per day admission and over 50 animals being used including horses, broncos, llamas and zebras. In 1907 Leland also erected its first school building which still stands today (former Mrs. Heiser High School). Leander experienced some success during World War II when many servicemen came here to work on local farms or build airfields or other military projects nearby such as Gaylor Air Force Base east of town (now Brazos Valley Airport). However by 1945 most employment in Leander had moved away following the war and development took over instead making Leander one of TX's smallest towns by 1990 with a population size of just 400 people living in businesses scattered around downtown.

They were able to do so because they became successful farmers with their own landholdings and by 1850 most of them were living within what is now Hudspeth County proper; except for three families that moved westward into Medina County sometime later (see below). In 1862 Captain James Bogue organized Camp Borden which fought against Confederate forces during the American Civil War primarily around here as part of General Joe Johnston's army known as "the Central Army." Many local residents enlisted or served in this brigade including George Meeks (20 years old), John Pugh (20 years old)and Michael Lynch (21 years old). On October 17th 1863 Captain Bogue's brigade attacked Confederate lines at Battle Hill near present day Leander where they sustained losses but eventually emerged victorious over more than 1,000 Confederates under General Jubal Early before withdrawing back to camp about two miles northward along Interstate 30 just south of where Battle Hill actually occurred - thus becoming one of only a few instances where cavalry troops engaged enemy infantry formations head on during combat!
