Leander is a town in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,633 at the 2010 census. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Leander has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated Cfa. The name of the town comes from Spanish explorer and missionary Francisco de la Garza y Costilla who named it San Fernando de Leander after his patron saint. The first white people to live in what is now Leander Township were squatters who moved from Missouri in 1853. They built a log cabin on the banks of the Brazos River. In 1868, General James Fannin discovered oil near present day Leander and leased land to refinery proprietor John H Showalter for $1 an acre. In 1870, A&P grocery store was opened by Wm. Lunsford & Brothers and became known as "The Galveston Oil Store". In 1888, J.C Caldwell established a post office in honor of his father-in-law Colonel John M Caldwell (1814–87). Mining operations began at nearby Canadian Hill in 1886 and soon led to the discovery of rich petroleum fields all over Midland County including those around present day Leander and other townships located along abandoned oil wells such as Elkton and Haskell; these discoveries made Midland County one of America's leading production areas for oil until about 1930 when production declined due to competition from underground natural gas reserves developed in other parts of Texas and Oklahoma
Leander was founded in 1836 by Senator John C. Frémont and his wife, Emma Goldsmith. The town grew quickly because of the trade with Mexico that flowed through the area. With its rich mineral resources, Leander became one of the most prosperous towns in Texas. In 1849, Leander was renamed Fort Worth after General Zachary Taylor's army temporarily occupied the area during the Mexican-American War.
