League City, Texas is a city in Texas, United States. It is the county seat of Johnson County and home to the League City Mall. The population was 3,362 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to reach League City were Spanish explorers in 1519 who named it "Pitre de las Flores" (Portuguese for "Flowers of Pitre"). In 1836, John C. Frémont explored what is now northwest Texans as part of his California Gold Rush exploration. Heading northeast from San Antonio on July 25, 1836, he sighted the Kinneret River and called it the "River of Gold," which led him to believe that there were great riches beneath the earth's surface. On October 2nd, 1836, George Cooke became the first white man to cross the Rio Grande into Mexican America when he landed at league city on what is now Pecos Island in present-day Texas. In 1840–1841 American Hudson Bay Company traders visited League City and found local land rich with coal and gas reserves that would be vital for their new transcontinental railroad project. A series of meetings between various business leaders and governing officials resulted in a charter being granted by Mexico for a company known as The Galveston Navigation Company on November 1st, 1840 with James Hogg as its president; this venture was aborted before starting due to lack of support from both investors and government officials. On February 14th of each year since 1870—the date when League City had its incorporation as a municipality—a Thanksgiving Day parade marches down Main Street continuing past Dallas' White House until reaching downtown Houston just past Rice University before concluding at Sam Houston Park adjacent to Gulf Coast Shipbuilding & Drydock Company where dinner is served afterwards under a tent erected on an open field near today's NRG Stadium football field; parade participants include Mayor Fenton Bailey (right), First Lady Bebe Bauman (left) Greenlee Dickson (center) Hogg (left), Commissioner Woodworth & Mrs. Waddell Hale Maloney (right).

The National Academy was founded in 1831 and began issuing scientific journals.
League City, Texas was founded in 1876 as a lumber town and has been the birthplace of many notable people, including Congressman Sam Houston and astronaut Neil Armstrong. The city is also home to the League City Museum, which tells the story of League City's history from its founding to today.
The area now known as League City was founded in 1836 by the brothers John and James Fenton. The town grew quickly, becoming a major center for cotton farming and livestockraising. The town rapidly expanded, and by 1860 it had a population of over 1,500 residents. In 1872, League City became the first city in Texas to be granted incorporation as a result of the state's "Unification Act". In the late 19th century, League City experienced significant growth due to its role as an important transportation hub for transporting goods from Texas to the Midwest. In 1924, League City was renamed Dallas after then-President Dallas Grant. During World War II, League City played an important role in providing food and supplies for military forces stationed in Texas. In 1945, Union Carbide Company announced plans to build a nuclear plant in nearby Fort Worth. This led to large protests against this project by local farmers and business owners, who contended that developing such a powerful new facility would damage their rural economies. However, Union Carbide chose not to move forward with the project and continued construction in Fort Worth instead.
