League City, Texas is a city in the US state of Texas. The population was 563 at the 2010 census and 612 as of 2019. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. League City is located on Buffalo Bayou in southeastern Harris County, near Sugar Land and Houston. The community was founded by Texans who arrived from Mexico in 1836. In 1861, Union General Godfrey Austin attacked Fort Rice while its garrison was seeking refuge from Confederate forces advancing across Buffalo Bayou; over 100 Texans were killed or wounded in this skirmish which helped spur the creation of the Houston Independent School District (HISD) two years later. HISD merged with remaining former public school districts withinHouston to form Brazoria County ISD on November 1, 1974 following an election by voters which saw Democrat Congressman Garnet Coleman win reelection against Republican incumbent George Bush Sr.. On July 14, 1977 Hurricane Ike struck Galveston Bayfront Park killing more than forty people and causing extensive damage to League City; however, no injuries occurred within the city limits as a result of Ike's impact alone. Two years later Hurricane Rita caused significant damage toLeagueCity; however $2 million worth of business investments were made within the city limits without any loss or injury reported to date. In August 2005 severe flooding destroyed much ofthe downtown core including many homes along Buffalo Bayou; however pockets of high water remained throughout most areas even months after rains stopped /docs/city_planning/flooding05.
