When Interstate 40 was built between Houston and San Antonio in 1970/71 league city saw an enormous growth as motorists traveled eastbound on I-10 then turned south to follow US 281 / Loop 410 until they reached I-10 again traveling westbound (I-40 currently divided this way). A school was established in 1850 and local residents soon began trading supplies and services with travelers along the river for goods such as cattle, flour, timber, watermelons, etc., which helped keep alive what would later become League City’s economy based on ranching and commerce rather than agriculture or industry
