The city of League City, Texas was founded in 1838 by James K. Polk and his wife, Anna Lamar Polk. The city was named for the Creek word "league" meaning a league of friends or kinsmen. The original Houston Ship Channel was built in the area around League City to provide access to this new port. It wasn't until 1859 that League City became a town when it annexed neighboring Livingston Parish. In 1907, League City merged with the nearby town of McKinney to form the current city limits.
