League City is a city in McLennan County, Texas, United States. The population was 105,898 at the 2010 census. League City is the county seat of McLennan County and home to the University of Houston campus. It is also a center for technology and pharmaceutical companies. The first occupants of what would become League City were pioneers who settled in present-day League City in 1836. By 1845, there were ten families living in present-day League City. In 1861, when Union troops burned down the courthouse and jail in Austin, Texas, they marched into town to loot supplies that had been taken from Government defenders during the Battle of Round Rock (April 6). That night, while citizens were going about their daily lives outside the burning buildings, Confederate General Robert Eickhoff's brigade crossed Waterloo Road and began looting stores inside the community before moving on to other objectives north of town. This event helped spark a Permanent Anglo American Settlement trend within what would become League City through which many businesses (and today's) have their roots. In 1865–1866 Union forces burned down several more local homes as part of an effort to destroy evidence linking Confederate General John Buford with treasonous activities around Austin. The damage done prompted residents to get together and form a committee to rebuild following reports that Buford may have been involved in planning or executing attacks on Ulysses S Grant's army near San Jacinto River on November 12th 61st that year; this led directly to his execution two weeks later by hanging from 5 paces from a cannon ball fired over Austin's Trinity Cathedral (now known as Rice Hall). On October 15th 1865 – three days after Buford's execution – Union soldiers burned down homes along Main Street between White Sands Boulevard and Hwy 290 east of town due to concerns over possible arsonist activity taking place within leaguecity limits; this occurred despite pleas by Mayor Fenton Lyle notifies all inhabitants prior thereto given previous fires associated with cattle drives across town years earlier that week east on Main Street resulted in no loss or damage being inflicted upon any property whatsoever including one barn which was destroyed by fire just one day prior! A group consisting of majority white citizens gathered up some tools they could find (including hoes and saws) & set about rebuilding homes lost or damaged due to past fires - something we take for granted these days without any negative repercussions ensuing! A few weeks later another group numbering 10+ people met at Captain James Bowie Park off West Seventh Street downtown where it was decided unanimously that business should resume as normal operations until further notice pending news relatedto events happening west of town including but not limited to recent skirmishes between Texans & Confederates happening near Slaughterhouse Gulch east off Interstate 35W just south of IH10 - something most likely connected with hostilities now raging southwest towards Baylor University! On December 4th 1865 Union troops burned down 3 more local homes/buildings northeast side main street between Cedar Creek Rd & US Highway 287 etc., again prompting locals/business owners gather up materials available (& some creative reconstruction abilities!)& rebuilt whatever was lost/damaged...the trend continued until approximately late 1866 when new legislation took effect limiting Legislatures ability TO fund replacement housing for certain classes or areas deemed "unsafe" thereby ending Permanent Anglo American Settlement within what would become League City!!! As such our current infrastructure includes 3 large shopping malls located adjacent Downtown: One anchored by Sears Tower (formerly Home Depot), anchors 4 nearby smaller malls: Wells Fargo Center located DowntownRichmondtown Plaza anchored by Chase Southwestern Mall anchor Fourth Floor LIVE center featuring state-of-the ART live concert venue [Houston] lighted stadium hosting NCAA Division 1 Men’s Basketball games [Houston] Today’s LeagueCity owes much its growth rate & vibrancy both politically & economically To Historic Leyland School District which merged into Consolidated School District #3 effective September 1st 1966 when school systems throughout McLennan County system were reorganized following passage Of Statewide Education Reform Act Of 1965 thru Joint Resolution No 2135 signed by Govt Agnew On January 17th1966!!!
