Lancaster, Texas is a small town located in the U.S. state of Texas. It has been inhabited by Native Americans for over a hundred years and was named after one of England's most important settlements, Lancaster Forge. The town was first settled by Methodists in 1836 and became an agricultural center during the early 19th century. In the late 19th century, the town developed into a manufacturing community that produced lumber, cigars, cattle, and other goods. However, economic recession in the 1930s led to a decline in population and businesses until the late 1980s when growth resumed and development has continued since then. Today, Lancaster is known for its vibrant retail sector as well as its colorful history which includes significant moments such as when General George Armstrong Custer died here in 1898 or when Jerry Lee Lewis performed at the Cotton Bowl Stadium here in 1987.
On October 3, 1836, a group of refugees from the Mexican-American War settled in what is now Lancaster, Texas. The town was named for General John Byers, who had fought in the war. The town's first post office was established in 1838. In 1840, Lancaster became the capital of the new Republic of Texas. A courthouse and jail were built in 1845 and 1846 respectively. Lancaster experienced significant growth during the 1850s and 1860s as a result of its location at the intersection of two major transportation routes: The Santa Fe Trail to Galveston and Austin and The Brazos River to Houston. In 1865, Lancaster was renamed Fort Worth after General William T. Sherman's march through Texas to retake Mexico City. However, by 1870 Fort Worth's population had dwindled to about 1,000 people when it was Relocated to Arlington (now Dallas) due to advances in railroads.
