It is located in the Wichita Mountains and has a humid subtropical climate. Lancaster was originally named "Harrisonburg," but because it had been within Indian Territory when the community was founded, it became known as "Indian Land." The name change to Lancaster after General George Biddle's Raid against Comanche Indians in 1874. In 1890, Lancaster incorporated as a town under the laws of Texas. The town successfully petitioned for statehood in 1912 and became an official U.S. city on November 8 of that year. Lancaster is home to many industry including a pharmaceutical company, airplane manufacturer, printing press manufacturer and other businesses which have made it one of the most prosperous small towns in Texas history. The largest employer here is the Kline Science Center which employs over 1,500 people across various sectors including research and development, education and marketing support services. Sheppard and his brother-in-law Gouverneur Morris with $2 per month income from trade goods they landed at Larkins Landing on the Trinity River. In 1886, a millinery business grew to include thirty women employees out of an original workforce of fiftyfive men and their families that included twelve children born to workers during the early years of milling operations led by George Dillard and wife Anna Dillard (1853-1925). At its peak production capacity for lace making around 1910 ( employing seventy women), it exported products all over the country including England where it had a monopoly due to being one of just two lace mills operating outside Philadelphia at that time according to contemporary reports; however this ceased when World War I created shortages of materials in Europe which damaged valuable lace exports as well as other industry across America In 1955, following annexation by Austin, Lancaster became an independent city under Mayor Tom Hayden with a population of only 697 residents when annexed into Austin proper On July 1st, 2005 Mayor Pat Lee announced plans for annexation into Round Rock based upon support from voters within the City Councilmember district represented by Art Sisneros This event resulted in what has come to be known as "The Town Hall Coup" asSisneros lost his bid for re-election against current mayor Lee despite leading double digits among male and female vote sharers
