Lancaster is a city in the US state of Texas, located in the Midland Hills area. The population was 382 at the 2010 census, making it one of the most populous cities in Texas. Lancaster has been settled since 1853 and became a city on December 12, 1907. In 1920 Lancaster was named after John A. Lancaster, an American politician who served as United States Representative from Pennsylvania from 1923 to 1929 and as Governor of Pennsylvania from 1933 to 1938. Lancaster's history can be traced back to 1853 when pioneer David Rice founded what is now known as Lancaster County. He named his new community after his brother-in-law, John A. Lancaster, who had also arrived in Texas some years earlier with wagonloads of goods and gold discoveries near San Antonio. John A. Lancaster served as Mayor of Philadelphia from 1861 to 1865 and then as Governor of Pennsylvania from 1923 to 1929 before becoming a United States Representative from Pennsylvania in that year's election. When he ran for office again in 1933 he won with 68% of the vote against incumbent Franklin D Roosevelt and was re-elected twice more before dying at age 80 on October 14, 1938 while still serving in Congress (the longest service ever by an American politician). Although many people believe that he would have become President if he'd lived longer, his death marked the end of an era for America's first African American Congressman - an event which was made all the more notable due to Roosevelt's own candidacy for Office two years later (he lost both elections).
Lancaster, Texas was founded in 1845 by John Lancaster and his wife, Nancy. The town was named for Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, which at the time included a large area of what is now Texas. The first settlers in the area were Methodist missionaries who arrived in 1847. By 1850, there were about 125 people living in Lancaster. In 1853, the county seat was moved from San Antonio to Lancaster after the death of Judge James Hanceville. In 1870, Lancaster became a railroad town and had a population of 1,000. It lost its status as a city when the railroad bypassed it in 1924.
