Lancaster is a town in Bastrop County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. Lancaster was founded in 1853 by James Fenton and his wife Margaret. In 1861, Lancaster served as the county seat for Bastrop County. The first post office in Lancaster was established on December 12, 1853, and it remained open until it closed on November 3, 1865. The first settlers in Lancaster were James Fenton and his wife Margaret. In 1856 they erected a log cabin on what is now Main Street in town. By 1860 they had built three more homes: two west of the courthouse square on North Court Street and one east of that on South Court Street. In 1861 Lancaster became the county seat for Bastrop County due to its location at the center of the county government and because other towns within Bastrop County did not have a courthouse or landline capable of serving as such an entity. At this time there were only six residents living in Lancaster: James Fenton, his wife Margaret; John Heard; Giles Goodloe; Solomon Poulson; and Elisha Stroudsbury. On October 15th 1861 a meeting was held at which it was decided to name the new town after General George Biddle Sherman who had been appointed Commander-in-Chief of all Union troops duringthe American Civil War (up until he resigned over strategy). On November 3rd 1865 local residents voted to rename their community after General Sherman with much fanfare but no change took place to official name documents until 1970 when "Lancaster" became "Bastrop". There are several contributing factors that led to this naming change including: 1) The fact thatGeneral Sherman had personally helped lead Union forces during both World Wars while residing in neighboring Dallas so those from Lancaster felt like they were being honored by having their namesake's hometown renamed as well; 2) When Dallas annexed Bastrop County in 1907 it reincorporated most of what used to be Bastrop County including much of what is now Lancaster; 3) A large number of people from eastern Texas moved into easternmost Bastrop County during the late 19th century making contact with people from nearby Lancaster who may have known about General Sherman's donation/ nickname etc.; 4) Since westernmost Bastrop County (including parts currently located within Barton City limits) seceded from Texas following Texan independence in 1850 many families whose ancestors lived within these boundaries also left behind descendants who would typically remember their heritage if asked about their ancestor's home state
