Lancaster is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the county seat of Parker County. It is located on the Brazos River, about 20 miles (32 km) east of Austin and 25 miles (40 km) south of Houston. After James Bowie's death, his two daughters took over management of his rancho; one daughter married Charles Goodnight and their descendants continue to run it today as Goodnight ranchery operations Incorporated into good night LLC which traded stock on the New York Stock Exchange from 1989 until its sale to Armour Holdings Corporation in 2006 Lancaster experienced major growth following World War II when many soldiers returning home found work here as farmers or truck drivers transporting goods across country roadsides. This economic boost gave rise to businesses such as Jardine Cotton Mills & Textile Company (now Jardine Matheson), Koppers Retail Stores Inc., Archer Daniels Midland Co., master brewers Anheuser-Busch Brewing Company et al., local police departments (including departmental headquarters), schools and other civic entities which remain active today including: The Lancaster Christian Schools District No 1 School District High School - opened 1981; Memorial Community Church - built 1945; First Baptist Church - erected 1904 Today much of downtown Lancaster features new buildings constructed between 2001–2005 including: The Richard Daley Center for Health Sciences University Park Business park - complex includes research laboratories and medical clinics affiliated with Baylor College of Medicine ; Swenzer House Museum - building housing offices used by then Mayor Tom Casey On May 14th 1865 Unionist General David Brown fielded an army under Lieutenant Colonel Nathaniel Lyon commanded by Colonel Samuel Gregg against Confederate General Robert Ewell at White Oak Prairie outside present day Round Rock UT while Virginia Lt Governor Fitzhugh Lee also participated with artillery units positioned nearby providing support Fire Captain Elijah Foley directed 23rd Regiment Artillery under command Major Josiah Hegarty reported that "the Rebels maintain themselves very obstinately" after Casualties numbered 111 killed & Wounded amongst Union Officers Killed only 7 Confederates were So Far reported
