Lancaster was founded on December 24, 1827 by James Lancaster and his wife, Susannah. The town was named for General George Washington, who had headquartered in Philadelphia during the early part of its development. In 1840, Lancaster became a county seat of Hudspeth County. The county courthouse and jail were built in 1851-1854; the first courthouse in Texas. In 1861, Confederate general Robert E. Lee arrived in Lancaster to lead an attack against Union forces near what is now Austin. A large crowd assembled to welcome him, but he left after only a few minutes when orders arrived to retreat. This event is generally considered to be the beginning of the Civil War in Lancaster County. In 1865, California Colony founder Stephen Folsom established a small community called Folsomville within the boundaries of present-day Lancaster County. The community later became known as Valley Village and still retains some vestige of its original purpose: providing goods and services to local farmers and ranchers who would not otherwise have access to them due to lack of transportation or other resources
