Lakeway is a town in Cooke County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The town was founded by H. W. Dixon and his family in 1879 as a small farming community near the western edge of what is now Dallas County. Dixon named it after his home state of Louisiana, which he had visited while on a business trip to that state in 1875. The first post office was established in 1881, and by 1888 Lakeway had two stores and one school. In 1902 the county seat was moved from Arlington to Lakeway, although the original courthouse still stands today inside the town limits. In 1954 Lakeway annexed neighboring communities of Garland and Mesquite to form a new city with a population of over 200,000 people – making it one of the largest annexations in Texas history. At that time it also became one of just four towns in Texas to have both an incorporated city status as well as full municipal government – along with Frisco (Dallas), Denton (Downtown Denton), and McKinney (McKinney). In 2006 Lakeway voters passed an ordinance legalizing same-sex marriage within its borders; this followed recent rulings from U .S . District Judge Reed O’Connor that Eagle Pass Township could not ban such weddings because its residents were “counselors” for Prop 8, California's Proposition 8 ballot measure banning gay marriage nationwide on December 6th, 2005. On November 3rd2006 elections saw incumbent Mayor Bill Shafer lose reelection to challenger Rick Whiteley by 51% to 49%. On January 13th2007 Shafer announced he would not seek re-election due to health concerns related to AIDS/HIV which he has been fighting since 1984 when he contracted the disease while serving as mayor of Garland Heights, TX
Lakeway was founded in 1857 by Judge W. H. Garland and his wife, Katy. The town grew rapidly due to the post office, schools, churches and businesses that were established there. In 1871, Lakeway became a city and was renamed Garland after Judge Garland's father. The city experienced rapid growth until it lost its charter in 1903. It regained its charter in 1926 and has since grown increasingly large with a population of over 100,000 people as of 2009.
