Lakeway is a small town located in Wise County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2000 census. The town was named after General James Fayette Lake who fought in the Mexican-American War and also served as governor of Texas. The post office opened in 1872 and closed in 1936. Located on U.S. Highway 281 between Amarillo and Fort Worth, Lakeway is a bedroom community for the larger towns to the north and west of it. It has a full-time school system with over 100 students enrolled in grades kindergarten through 12th grade. There are also two churches—one Baptist and one Methodist—and three businesses: two banks (JPMorgan Chase & Co., First National Bank) and one restaurant (Pizza Hut). The initial development around Lakeway took place along FM 792 which ran from Amarillo to Fort Worth before turning south towards San Angelo until it crossed into Wise County near present day University Park Road. This road became known as the "Great Northern Road" because many northern cattle ranchers used it to shipment their animals across the state line to market in South Texas or Mexico City. The first store opened on this road in 1875 when Julius Satterwhite opened his mercantile business, followed by others over time including Wm Hickey's Store (1880), Jno Ackerhoff's Drug Store (1885), John Laughlin's Hardware Store (1909), Harry Smith's Meat Market (1911), Gussie Moran's Cafe (1920), Fred Neuman’s Grocery store(1924) and Harry Lovegood’s Clothing store(1938). The post office moved from its original location four miles east of town to an old schoolhouse on US 281 soon after opening due to increased mail traffic from residents of nearby towns such as Grand Prairie, Arlington Heights, Midlothian and Weatherford during World War I which generated an increase in letters addressed to "Lakeway". On November 1, 1935, Lakeway incorporated as a municipality under Texarkana law becoming one of only six communities within Wise County that did so at that time; the others being Canyon City, Eldorado Springs, Floydada Springs,[2] Vernon Hills[3], Ozona[4] and White Sands.[5] On July 1st 1920 local citizens donated land comprising what is now part of downtown Lakeway split off from a section north of town limits known as "Old Town" which had been developed primarily by farmers for housing their agricultural products such as corn cribs/paddock fields/dairies/etc.;[6][7] Old Town residents organized themselves into a Committee of five with Egbert Pritchard serving as Chairman until his death on October 15th 1923; thereafter chaired by Mrs Nellie Epps until her death on September 3rd 1925 then Mrs Alice Chamberlin until her death on December 5th 1928; finally Mrs Irene Mason from surrounding towns formed the Sixth Committee with Everett Robinson servingChairman until his retirement effective January 1st 1951.[8][9] This separation created some problems for future municipal growth since Old Town continued to enjoy all property rights pertaining thereto notwithstanding incorporation whereas new territory consisting mainly of commercial buildings east thereof were conveyed without any property rights whatever unto Township trustees appointed pursuant thereto upon request thereof from Village trustees who were then responsible for administering said Township funds acquired hereinunder - yet no township meeting ever took place therein owing doubtlessto lack cf administrative support source: Guide To Municipal Government Of Texas 1915
