Lake who had donated land for the new post office and built a house on it. In 1911, the townsite was annexed by Dripping Springs and became part of that municipality. A school district was created from portions of both Dripping Springs and Lakeway in 1916, but that village ceased operation several years later when its own schools were consolidated into the Dripping Springs School District. Lakeway is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,597 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The first post office in Lakeway opened on October 10, 1881. The name "Lakeway" comes from an Indian word meaning "a place where water meets land." The first white settlers in this area were led by Capt. John A. Hogg and his family who arrived in 1859 from Illinois. They named their new community after Major General James Fenton's Creek Settlement just east of present-day Lakeway and they called it "Fenton's Landing". Captain Hogg's heirs sold their holdings to Lubbock Oil & Gas Corporation in 1902 which renamed it "Lubbock". After the incorporation of Hudspeth County, residents voted to change the name to Lakeway on November 3, 1907 because that is what USGS had recommended for the town site (the original name for Hudspeth County was McLennan). In 1914, Lakeway experienced its first flood when a combination of heavy rains and Jimmie Johnson's crashed car destroyed several homes along the creek near present day Lakeview Drive. Immediately following this event local businesses established a committee to raise money for damage repair and prevention which raised over $1,000 within three weeks. In 1916 another flood caused extensive damage but no loss of life as happened two years earlier when Hurricane Agnes lashed Texas bringing torrential rains and flooding that affected more than 140 townships statewide. On July 24, 1936 President Franklin D Roosevelt announced his plan to create four national forests located in Texas: Sixteen million acres would be dedicated to forest preservation while remaining ranchlands were given back to farmers; 414 miles of dirt road would be improved or replaced; 2 million cubic yards (21 m3) of fill would be dumped into riverside gullies; 2 million board feet (610 cm3) of lumber would be cut down; 8 hundred jobs could be created throughout forestry employment areas; 250 miles (500 km) of power lines would also be eliminated or upgraded within these forests across all states including New Mexico and Oklahoma where competition for electric power providers was intense during World War II . This action helped stimulate cattle production throughout much Of Texas creating many jobs as well As thousands if not millions more people gained access To education That Would Lead To Economic Successes Today In Each And Every State! The election year 1944 saw another major economic development with over 1 million men served in World War II outfitting soldiers with Victory gardens so they could eat fresh fruitsAnd vegetables instead Of processed foods developed In America! Many families returned home victorious But Poverty remained Throughout Most Areas! Even Though Forest Preserve Lands Were Deeded Back To Farmers Our Communities Still struggled With Poverty And Hunger Many continuedTo Struggle Which Made It Impossible For Many Families To Return Home So They Settled Outside Of TheForest!. lakeway prospered Throughout These difficult times however continuingto struggle until finally becoming an economically thriving community once again!
Lakeway was founded in 1859 by John H. Durant and named for him. The town was laid out on a shallow stream near the present site of Round Rock, Texas. The first post office opened in 1860, and the first store was built in 1861. In 1872, the Central Texas Railroad reached Lakeway and began to bring passengers and goods overland from San Antonio. By 1880, Lakeway had a population of about 100 people.
