Lakeway is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,619 at the 2010 census. It lies on the banks of the Brazos River. The name Lakeway comes from the word "lake" and "way", meaning path or path of travel. The town was founded in 1879 by nine men who were looking for a place to settle after leaving their previous home in Wichita Falls, TX. They named their new settlement after John A. Lake, an early settler in Hudspeth County. Lakeway began as a farming community with livestock and agricultural production until World War I when it began to grow into a city with manufacturing capabilities due to its location on the Brazos River which offered easy access to transportation and markets for goods. In 1941, lakeway annexed nearby White Settlement and became part of the city of houston In 1978, lakeway passed through a land acquisition process that resulted in its annexation by Houston's Midtown district including most of downtown Houston Houston's decision not to keep much of Midtown as an annexe left many businesses and residents near Lakeshore Drive without assurances they would be able to keep their properties if they voted against annexation In 1994, after years of negotiations between homeowners and developers culminating with passage of legislation granting homeownership rights to those who rejected annexation, lakeshore Drive was re-established as an enclave within Houston proper

Lakeway is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,888 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. The town was founded by A.W. Ladd and J.B. Fenton in 1887 as Big Spring on the east side of Lakeway reservoir. The name was changed to Lakeway in 1907 after the original water supply for the town stopped flowing due to a cave-in nearby. In 1951, Ladd dammed up part of Old Hickory Creek so that it could be used for irrigation purposes; this caused many properties along Old Hickory Creek to become un agriculturally viable and were sold off to developers or abandoned. In 1959, Lakeway merged with neighboring towns Wellston and Garland to form the new city of Garland which had a population of over 100,000 people when it became independent from Hudspeth County on January 1, 1961 On July 1st 2006 Lakeway lost its status as an incorporated municipality because it voted not to annex any other municipalities within its limits since incorporation would have required special legislation approved by both chambers of the TX Legislature Nowadays most activities take place within either Wellston or Garland itself
