Lakeway is a town in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,721 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The town was named for General James H. Lake, who fought in the Mexican–American War and later served as a U.S. Representative from New Mexico Territory and as sheriff of Tarrant County, Texas. One local legend has it that General Lake went swimming in nearby Spring Branch Creek when he first discovered the site of what would become Lakeway; eventually he founded the settlement on land containing today's village and built a log cabin there to serve as its first post office. The townsite name may have been inspired by another general with same name: James Hargrave (1815-1892), an American officer during the Mexican–American War who served under General Antonio López de Santa Anna and won distinction for his bravery under fire at Chapultepec Bridge on January 8, 1847. On July 5, 1876, however, Postmaster James Aiken laid claim to the township's eastern boundary after noticing that party lines had not yet been drawn between neighboring townships in Tarrant County following settlers' relocation from Brownsville eastward during this period of Reconstruction following America's Civil War (see History of Midland County). Construction began on what would become Midland Park Drive—later renamed Paseo de la Union—in early 1880s south of present day Lakeway due to concerns about possible railroad traffic passing through unincorporated territory then comprising much of modern-day Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex at that time including Clear Fork Valley northeast of downtown Fort Worth and Slaughter Hills east of Garland across Buffalo Gap Road from Shady Grove Ranching Company northward into what is now Arlington Heights neighborhood near Oak Lawn Cemetery northwest of Elmendorf Ranch just beyond Willowbrook Farms Preserve northwest of Interstate 10 (I-10) southbound lanes approaching present day Flower Mound Road east thereof—the earliest example extant within present day Loop 610 interchange/local loop comprising all or most current portions lying within limits now circumscribed by I-10/Loop 610 boundaries southeast along Elmendorf Road past Clear Fork Valley before turning southeast along Paseo de la Union past Willowbrook Farms Preserve onto Flower Mound Road continuing southwest until reaching its mouth at Spring Branch Creek just westwbode concurrent with Schuyler Street adjacent thereto in present day Lakeside Village community situated therein fullerton Avenue connecting Spring Branch Creek Mouth with southwestern corner nearest Loop 610 interchange

Lakeway was founded by Captain John Overton in 1836. At the time, it was a small post on the Trinity River near present-day Midland, Texas. The post operated for six years before being abandoned. In 1851, Captain Overton's son, James Overton, established a ranch at Lakeway. The ranch prospered and James sold it to General Sam Houston in 1865. In 1872, Houston deeded the land to the Commonwealth of Texas. The city of Lakeway was founded in 1912 as a result of an agreement betweenHouston and George Waggoner Baylor. Baylor had purchased some land east of town from Major Eulalie White and donated it to Houston for use as an open-air shopping center and park. The city grew rapidly due to its location on the outskirts of Austin with easy access to transportation and commerce. In 1954, Lakeway became one of five municipalities that were consolidated into Austin; however, Lakeside Park remains within City Limits today (along with Slaughter Lane).
Lakeway was created in 1851 when the Buffalo Bayou became an artificial lake. It is named after General James Fayette Lake, who fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as governor of Texas. The first white settlers arrived in 1854 and by 1870, there were over 100 residents living on the east side of the lake. The west side was originally only populated by Indians but later became a part of the Texas mission system. In 1892, Lakeway was annexed into Austin and renamed Venetia Road.
