Lakeway was founded by Scotsmen in 1879 as a small town on an artificial island in Clear Fork Creek. In 1906, it became a municipality and has since grown to include portions ofDallas, Fort Worth and Arlington counties.

Lakeway is a town in Wise County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,242 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The first settler in what became Lakeway was Capt. John Gregg on March 10, 1836. Gregg and his family bought of land from Tomball Creek Rancho Grande de la Garza Trujillo heirs in what is now Wise County. On July 1, 1837, Gregg post office opened at the junction of Ulysses S. Grant and San Antonio Roads (now FM 2924) with two others that had been established nearby: Big Spring and Pecos City; these were all within the present-day Limits of Austin by 1880 when Lakeway was founded. On December 11, 1850, James Witherspoon donated to the community land east of present-day FM 1425 for a Methodist church and cemetery which would eventually accommodate 4500 people including 300 children under the age of 12 living on one site near today's shoreline across from Clearlake Marina Resort & Casino on Barton Creek Beachfront Park beach just north of Interstate 35W exit 122B/FM 2627 exit 281A/SR 410 E). This donation formed much of today's business district downtown as well as most eastern edge along US 290 including parts now located in unincorporated portions of Travis County south of I-35W exit 121A (formerly FM 806), east side between I-35W exit 121B and SR 410 W (former Loop 610 path), southeast corner between I-35W exits 121C and 127A (later US 290),NW corner between I-35W exits 121D and 128A (later US 290) – forming many shopping malls starting with Regal Shopping Center northwest then moving SW to Jardine Mall before returning to downtown areas around State Capitol Complex beginning with Republic Square outside Capitol Building before ending near current location near Riverside Park Zoo off McCullough Rd.). In 1886 local judge George Washington Hays offered for sale 640 acres southwest quarter mile long lying between Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard E / Old Colorado River Road NARROWLY NW OF PRESBYTERIAN HIGH SCHOOL / NORTH OF COUNTY LINE extending into Brazoria County - immediately adjacent to present day Lakeway - this offer being accepted by purchaser who named it "Hays Addition" after local Judge George Washington Hays' father who had donated same amount years earlier while also serving as Justice Of Peace for Wise County.. Homes started arriving soon after purchase with some families coming direct from Texas while others took trains or boats upriver until railroads arrived making transportation more accessible……………………………………….. builder/developer Alexander Mears began developing this parcel once purchased becoming one of first successful developers in that area…………………. In 1951 water levels reached flood stage but nothing was done about it until 1954 when developer Harry Longstreet built dam & reservoir creating lake covering almost entire original 640 acre tract…………………………………………………. ....... Today much remains unchanged other than name change to Lakeway………………………………………..

One notable business that has been around since before Lakeway was founded is the Arboretum which opened in 1916 and still operates today as one of the largest single acre Arboretum anywhere in the US The prominent US Congressman who represented District 9 from 1974-1983, Tom Litton also resided in neighboring Richardson for many years until he moved to Austin proper seat then redistricted within Tarrant County into District 2 where he currently resides with his wife Elinor Litton (a former chairwoman of Harris County Commissioners Court).
Lakeway was founded by General James Polk in 1845 as a rancho park. In the late 1800s, industry began to grow in the area and the town of Lakeway was founded. The city of Austin was established in 1901 and Lakeway became part of Austin. A cotton gin was built in 1911 and it remains one of the oldest mills in Texas. The city of Round Rock formed in 1916 and it annexed Lakeway. In 1951, the US Interstate 35 freeway was completed through Austin and most of Central Texas and annexation followed. In 1984, the city of Georgetown annexed parts of Round Rock, making it a total metropolitan area with a population over 1 million people.
