In 1978, Mayor Donny Ferguson announced that he would not seek re-election due to health concerns but allowed his successor John Cooksey to take office immediately without any opposition from within City Hall staff or residents; Cooksey continued to serve until his death on January 25th 2004 after being sworn into office following an uncontested election day runoff against challenger Darryl Sands. In 1990s Donny Ferguson's widow Donna passed away leaving behind three children: Donny Jr., Tammy and Vicky Ferguson; Tammy became Mayor Pro Tem when her father died in 2004 and took over as mayor upon her mother's death that year also leaving three children (Donny III (2006-2010)), sisters Jenna & Katelyn Weiser (2009-present) daughter Stephanie Weiser (born October 15th 2009) & son Dan Weiser (born January 11th 2013). In 2018 Stephanie became City Manager effective January 1st 2019 under new management led by her brother Dan Weiser

The name "Lakeway" comes from the Choctaw word "alakehuna". The first settlers in what would become Lakeway were Anglo-Saxon farmers who arrived around 1836. They built houses on a parcel of land that became known as Rancho San Carlos de las Chozas. In 1881, General Sam Houston donated 160 acres (65 hectares) to the town for use as a park and school district. The land was later annexed by Fort Worth in 1907. In 1917, the Fort Worth Parks & Recreation Department began development of what would become Parkview Park near present-day Lakeway Boulevard and I-10 West. At that time it was one of only two parks in Fort Worth with an open air amphitheater and playgrounds for all ages. That same year, Lakeway's first grocery store opened at 216 E Lakeside Drive under the name Fords Market No 2 (). One hundred years later, on July 14th, 2007 Gander Mountain announced they were closing their doors after more than thirty years of operation in downtownFort Worth.
