Lakeway is a city in Archer County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,475 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Archer County. Lakeway is located on the Texan border with Comal County. The first permanent settler in what became present-day Archer County was James Denton in 1836. A post office called Denton was established in 1839 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1870, Daniel Boone built a cabin on what is now the eastern edge of town. In 1875, Pemberton Brothers started a cotton gin on land that still stands near town center today. By 1900, there were twenty four businesses operating in downtown Lakeway and over one hundred residents living around the bend on Elm Street and Polk Road southeast of town limits. In 1906, Sweetwater Water Power Corporation began generating electricity from water pumped out of nearby Cherry Creek for use by local farmers and businesses; this led to rapid growth for downtown Lakeway as business owners took advantage of cheap power from the creek while also creating new jobs for locals during World War I when energy production increased demand for munitions made in America's war effort abroad. The Crystal Palace Hotel (now known as the Embassy Suites) opened its doors to guests in 1911 just east of downtown Lakeway after years of planning and construction by civic leaders including Mayor John Witherspoon and Drayton McMullen – then an editor with "The Dallas Morning News". Lakeway is a city in McAllen County, Texas, United States. The population was 7,534 at the 2010 census. It is part of the McAllen-Edinburg-Mission District. The first post office in Lakeway was established in 1881. In 1907, the city added a second post office and named it Elmira after Elmira, New York City. The name Lakeway comes from a trail that led through the area now called Elmira before reaching the present day town of Lakeway. The first settler in what is now Lakeway was Fenton Hamer who built a cabin on what is now known as State Highway 82 near present day Brushy Creek. A grant from President James K. Polk to Andrew White allowed Hamer to build a mill on his property which became known as Lakeside Mill; this mill manufactured flour and feed for local farmers until 1915 when it closed because of World War I damage done by firebombing by Japan bombers . Lakeside Mill reopened after World War I and continued operations until 1951 when it closed again due to economic conditions within McAllen County during the early 1950s . A new flourmill opened in 1952 on land donated by John Waddell (the father of Houston Astros owner Drayton Paige). This mill operated until 1978 when it went out of business due to competition from larger mills at that time . In 1984, First Baptist Church purchased an old cotton gin located west of town off FM 620 for use as their church's affiliated school until 1994 when they sold it to Schulenburg Independent School District which still uses it today as their school board headquarters
