A large shopping mall called Main Street Mall opened in 2006 in downtown Lakeway after years of planning by local officials and developers who saw it as an attractive opportunity to increase business growth around an existing public infrastructure

Lakeway was created in 1872 when the Texas Railroad Company built a line from San Antonio to Beaumont. The town was named after General Sam Houston's brother, James A. Lake. In 1907, the Texas Legislature passed a bill establishing the city of Austin as the county seat of Travis County and giving the town of Lakeway its own charter. The townsfolk promptly voted to rename themselves Lakeway, Incorporated. The first residents of Lakeway were white and male farmers who arrived primarily from Kentucky and Tennessee. They began developing their land into farms that produced corn, beans, rice, and other crops. By 1910, there were over 100 homes in the community and about 300 people living in it. During World War I (1914-18), the local military branch conducted training exercises at nearby Mount Carmel Air Force Base which resulted in an increase in business for both businesses and housing developers throughout the area. The post-World War II boom period saw growth for both businesses and residential properties in Lakeway as well as increased development around Interstate 10 which made it easier for people to get around town. However, by 2000s things had started to unravel nationally with several economic crashes leading to job loss for many locals including many of those who had worked hard during earlier periods of prosperity in Lakeway

The town was named for General Houston, who had overseen the Mexican-American War's annexation of Texas. In 1871, Lakeway incorporated as a city and soon became a mainstay of the Lone Star State's agricultural economy. Today, Lakeway is one of the fastest-growing cities in Texas and home to some of its most iconic businesses, including Hobby Lobby and AT&T Park. The city also boasts a rich cultural history that includes two major annual summer festivals - the Austin Folk Festival and the Toyota Arts Festival - as well as several smaller events each year.
