In 1925, it became a city and has since grown to have a population of over 5,000 people. Downtown Lakeway features a large mural of Texas Governor Anastasia Alvarado by artist John Dodson that was dedicated on November 15th, 2006. Downtown Lakeway also includes the Lamar Municipal Court Building which served as Headquarters for the Texas Rangers from 1907 until 1959 when they moved to Fort Worth. Lakeway is home to several churches including First Baptist Church (founded 1865), Methodist Episcopal Church (1892), and United Methodist Church (1901). Other notable buildings include the old High School which burned down in 1927 but was rebuilt with new construction; and downtown's only golf course which opened in 1965
