Lakeway, Texas is a small town in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,853 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1881 by John C. Lake and named for him and for the natural water source nearby. In 1903, it became a city. Lakeway is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. Lakeway owes its beginnings to John C. Lake, who came to Williamson County in 1881 from Michigan with his father and two brothers to explore new land north of Austin that would become Texas after independence from Mexico was announced on July 4 of that year. The townsite on the Trinity River he discovered had been abandoned by pioneers because there was no water available for irrigation or cattle watering purposes; however, local ranches did have some cotton plantations near them so they were able to continue growing crops until the early 1900s when transportation became available and shipping became more efficient across the Gulf of Mexico making cotton grown closer to home more profitable. In 1903, as part of a larger effort to attract settlers west of Austin into Williamson County (specifically around Round Rock), City Manager Harry Aiken persuaded then-Governor James Kenedy to issue a proclamation calling for citizens of all denominations throughout central Texas to come forward with offers of land suitable for farming and development "in any good location not already claimed." This included what is now Lakeway; lots were offered at $1 per acre which at that time constituted about $40 per square mile (0.4 per km2). With only 10 families applying within one week's notice via mail - most coming from outfitting businesses in Houston - City Manager Aiken arranged an open tryout session at his office on October 7th where residents could see how best they could improve their lot before submitting applications later that month under conditions where anyone who didn't make it through would have their application accepted without consideration if they applied again within 30 days thereafter! At this session many people gathered around Mayor Aiken's desk as he read off individual applications like those made by Mrs Alice Daugherty who'd moved down from Dallas years earlier; she got her own lot just east of downtown along Slaughter Road (). The very first house built in what is now Lakeway was actually quite rudimentary: four logs laid side by side with sawedoffs running between them forming an I-shape with four brick chimneys attached ().. After several years of construction (and due largely too high expenses associated with bringing multiple homes upriver) Tredegar Creek slowly began flowing back over original bank creating an ideal channel for homesites downstream... eventually eliminating access upstream altogether leading directly to today's lakefront property ().
