Gun Parts History: The Gunpowder Plot It was on July 4th, 1605, that a group of Protestants named the Gunpowder Plot attempted to blow up King James I’s palace in London with some small explosives hidden inside powder kegs. Unfortunately for them, they were foiled by government officials who quickly realized what they were up against. King James had put together a very strict gun control policy that prohibited Catholics from owning firearms, making it difficult for them to carry out this plot. This led to several key arrests and convictions in connection with the plot including John Churchill (later Earl Of Chesterfield), Lord Clarendon (a wealthy lawyer), Robert Cecil (the Secretary Of State For War), Thomas Fairfax (the 2nd Earl Of Argyll) and Sir Francis Walsingham (the Commissioner Of Police). The punishment which these people received was harsh: all except Churchill were sentenced to life imprisonment; Clarendon got 5 years; Walsingham got 10 years; Fairfax got 15 years; and Lord Argyll got 30 years! The severity of their sentences shows just how dangerous this kind of crime could be- if it had succeeded, much political instability would have followed throughout England.
