Lakeway is a census-designated place (CDP) in Leon County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex. The community began as a small farming town near the present day intersection of Highway 6 and FM 1960. The first post office was established in 1908 and the first store opened in 1909. By 1915, the community had grown to include a school, grocery store, livery stable and two churches. In 1921, Lakeway incorporated and began rapid growth with annexations from other towns in Leon County including Springdale and Palestine. In 1930, Lakeway became an independent city when it absorbed Springdale which had been annexed by Medina County that year. That same year saw another annexation by Leon County adding much of current-day Arlington Heights to the community. In 1935, Lakeway merged with nearby Palestine to form what would become one of largest cities in Texas with a population of over 100,000 people according to its 1950 estimate. In 1956, lakeway consolidated withSpringdale forming what would become one of the most populous CDPs within LBJ's Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex despite its smaller size by2010 count having only 2% of LBJ's total metropolitan area population

Lakeway, Texas is a small town located in Gregg County, Texas. It was founded on the banks of the Trinity River by the Pecos Band of Native Americans in 1871. The majority of residents are descendants of European immigrants who arrived in the area during and after the American Civil War. The first store in Lakeway was established by John Hynes and his brother-in-law, George W. Sands, in 1865. The town started to grow rapidly after it was designated as a stop on the Santa Fe Railway in 1873. By 1890, Lakeway had a population of 350 people and it became an important agricultural community based on its corn crops and cattle production. In 1925, Lakeway merged with nearby Gillespie to form Gillespie Falls Incidental Dam which continues to be used for irrigation today. The name change came about due to confusion among local residents over what lake (the Trinity) should be called after both towns were created at that time. In 1936, when Lakeway incorporated as a municipality, it chose the name “Lakeway” because it felt more associated with its past than Gillespie Falls Dam which had been renamed “Gillespie” since its creation two decades earlier. Through numerous expansions and reductions over time, Lakeway has come to epitomize growth by businesses or individuals anywhere within Gregg County – whether that be through incorporation into larger municipalities such as Amarillo or Junction City; downtown annexation/renaming following major events such as Hurricane Ike or construction projects such as ring road expansion; or simply continued business success despite changing demographics elsewhere within our county (euphemistically referred to herein as "growth"). Today's economic landscape is one where technology companies have taken center stage; smaller but equally successful commodity farms are being replaced by more innovative ranching operations; while single family homes continue to dominate development throughout our rural area - providing stability for longtime residents while also accommodating new arrivals who may desire more suburban living experiences without having access to many services located closeby (such as transportation). Lakeway was founded in 1881 by George H. Lake as a ranchland east of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first post office was established at Lakeway in 1882. In 1889, the railroad reached Lakeway and began to service the community with trains carrying goods from downtown Dallas to the ranchlands east of town. In 1912, the lake was dammed and created as a reservoir for irrigation purposes. In 1945, due to World War II shortages of water resources, the lake was drained and became part of Elmendorf Ranch Park. Today, Lakeway is a tourist attraction with a number of businesses located within its borders including an inn/motel, grills and Fishing lakes stocked with walleye, catfish, bass and bluegill fishing opportunities are available.
