Lakeway is a town in Gregg County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Lakeway was Hemanus Thomas, who arrived in 1853. The town was named for General Waco Hugh Nolen Caldwell, who helped lead the Texas Revolution and died of a fever at Fort Worth in 1855. A post office called Caldwell was established in 1857, and remained operational until it closed on January 3, 1893. In 1898, an act of Congress designated Gregg County as including all of Tyler County except for the towns of Tyler and Carrollton to form a new county seat located near present day Amarillo. However, due to objections from these two towns (which were then within Tyler County), Lakeway remained its own independent municipality until 1907 when it became part of Amarillo along with other towns within Gregg County when the county was created by statehood legislation. The first store built in Lakeway was operated by John Fenton and opened on July 10, 1865 on Main Street between Broadway and Pecan Street. George Smedley also operated a store there before moving his business to Commerceville in 1870. A post office called Smedley was established there on October 21, 1870; it served until May 12th 1899 when it moved to Taylor Branch after being destroyed by fire. The first school open in what is now Lakeway was taught by Cissy Cook from 1872-1875 under teacher'sRowell's Academy which stood south east corner Elm Street between First Avenue North and Second Avenue South until 1906 when it burned down due to weather damage; that same year instruction began under Mrs. Lillian Smith using her home which still stands today as MrsSnyder Elementary School across from Walmart across from IHOP
Lakeway was founded in 1881 by John Fenton and James H. Mason as a rancho on the east side of the Trinity River. The town site was surveyed in 1882, and construction began on the original courthouse and jail in 1883. The first post office opened in 1886, and growth along the Trinity River led to the addition of a sawmill, store, school, hotel, and other businesses in 1907. In 1916, Lakeway became an independent city under a charter granted by the Texas Legislature. City officials developed plans for annexation of neighboring towns but this never materialized.
