The first settlement in what is now Lakeway was made by Hennepin County wagon drivers and cowboys on February 14, 1836, when they encampmented near present day Loop 410 and Creek Road. The town site was surveyed by Captain John S. Foard on March 3–4, 1837. The first post office was established in Lakeway on October 20, 1837 by J.C. Crain with the name of "New Hope". A store and saloon were built near present day US 31/Loop 410 on December 12, 1839 by Wm & Margaret Eaves; the first school opened in what is now Lakeway on January 9th of that year. Mrs Foard taught for several months before her death in 1840 from tuberculosis brought on during her stay in India; her husband continued to teach until his death in 1861 from that disease also.. In 1845 mail reached Lakeway from San Antonio via FM 727 which then connected with US 183 east of Lubbock through Canyon Pass
