Lakeway is a city in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 508 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The 2010 Census reported that Lakeway had a population of 568. The name "Lakeway" was given to the community by pioneers who named it after Lakeridge Ranch, located east of present-day Lakeway on what is now Farm Road 620. This ranch was founded in 1879 by John Witherspoon and his partner James Irvine as a cattle ranch and later became an agricultural center with a flour mill, hog farm, and other businesses. In 1907, the town site was platted as an incorporated village with a post office and school. The first residents were German immigrants who founded their own small business district around their homes on Main Street and Eighth Avenue south of the railroad tracks. In 1912, when Interstate 10 was built through Midland County and bypassing Sheetrock Township to the west, rural residents voted to annex themselves into Lakeway so that they would not have to pay taxes twice to two towns which were sharing infrastructure (the annexation came into effect on July 1). With only 54 residents in 1911 when its incorporation date came about - most of whom lived along I-10 - Lakeway quickly grew into one of Midland County's largest communities with over 2200 inhabitants by 1920. The growth slowed during World War II because many local industry closed down due to wartime competition; however, post-war prosperity brought new industries such as auto parts Manufacturing company Koyo Motor Corporation which began production at City Hall in 1948; Samco Steel Products which opened up adjacent to Town Hall in 1951; International Paper Company (IPP) which moved from Fort Worth in 1950s; Sears Roebuck & Co., Incorporated (Sears) situated across from IHOP restaurant on Commerce Street; Amoco Refining Company until its closure in 1984 - all adding jobs to the community while contributing $27 million annually to local coffers; also developing nearby unincorporated areas such as Rancho Mirage Industrial Park (now known as Glenbrook Village), Haltom Hill Farms subdivision north of City Limits Drive/Highways 183/290/US Highway 290 Business Loop before it annexed those areas into itself too In 1957 – just prior to Texas becoming an independent state – Lakeway's main street changed names from 8th Avenue South To State Capitol Boulevard recognizing then Govt House Annexation into neighboring Austin giving cityhood status without changing name or numbers within community . In 1985 –when last oil refinery closed down within town limits– Mayor Solis announced plans for redevelopment that included housing units near shopping centers including Higher Ground Mall offcommerce Dr.; also medical complexes including Baylor University Medical Center off Guadalupe St., Northlake Hospital off US Highway 290 Business Loop #2 just east of Lamar Blvd.; finally Clubhouse Plaza Shopping Center being developed east side OfCommerce Dr./Guadalupe St.– bringing much needed retail development outside city limits for first time since incorporations began more than 100 years ago
