Lakeway is a town in Bexar County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,527 at the 2000 census. It lies on the border of Bexar and San Antonio counties. The first settler in what is now Lakeway was James Hargrave. He built a cabin on the banks of Big Creek in 1827. In 1828, David Yeates settled here and started a flour mill. A post office called Lakeway was established in 1839 and continued operating until it was discontinued in 1862. In 1865, John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort south of present-day Lakeway after his defeat of Mexican forces at Buenavista Creek northwest of San Antonio. On February 9, 1870, US President Ulysses S. Grant awarded General Philip Sheridan the Medal of Honor for his role leading US troops during the Battle of Buenavista Creek. Lakeway grew rapidly due to its location as a crossroads for travelers between San Antonio and Bexar County as well as nearby Topeka and Wichita Falls. Wagon trains traveled along Big Cypress Road from Houston to Abilene through Lakeview Cemetery before turning northeast to reach homes around Nuttall Avenue near Nowata Street (now Loop 410). By 1890, there were more than 100 businesses in town with an estimated population over 1,200 people; many small shops operated out of home kitchens or outbuildings shared by several families who rented space from local farmers or ranchers accessible only by wagon train ride or horseback ride from their properties next door or down the road On December 26th 1889, Mayor Harry Culp announced that all school children must go into town to attend school because “the present situation [of] not having any schools within this small community will occasion much discontent among our citizens” The first public school opened January 3rd 1890 educating students grades one through eight across five buildings – two classrooms/rooms with coal burning stoves each side; an auditorium/ gymnasium on one side marked for girls only which seated about sixty students; single classrooms/ rooms without heating facilities were used for instruction grades nine through twelve; An additional classroom/ room was added later that year but never used again because it became too cold outside during winter session

The popularity of shotguns followed suit soon afterwards[4], but handgun sales didn’t really take off until the late 1800s when Colt introduced their Model 1892 revolver into society[5]. As we know today, gunfire has always been an important part of American culture – from Revolutionary War battles where cannon fired shells into enemy encampments to today’s mass shootings which involve pistols and rifles. And while there are certainly different types of firearms that are associated with certain cultures (like machine guns), patriotism remains one constant across all cultures. Lakeway was founded by the Comanche Tribe in 1836. The town was first called "Cottonwood" and then "Red River." It was renamed after General Sam Houston in 1848. Lakeway became a city in 1907 and it is now the seat of Arlington County, Texas. The town had a population of around 50,000 people in 1920 and 100,000 people by 1930. The cotton industry declined during World War II, but the town has since regained some popularity as a bedroom community for Arlington Heights and Crystal City. In recent years, Lakeway has become an important center for agriculture with plantations producing crops such as papaya, yucca, cottonseed oil, peanuts, and rice.
Lakeway began as a small creek that ran through the center of town. The first settler, John Hudspeth, built a cabin on the property in 1827. In 1831, the town was founded by Capt. James White and others and named after General Sam Houston’s military victory at Blanco River in 1836. The original town hall was located on Main Street between Second and Third Streets. The building was destroyed by fire in 1903, but it was replaced by the present building on First Street in 1904. Lakeway became an incorporated municipality in 1912 and held its first meeting at the new courthouse. The name change to Lakeway Village reflect community growth and civic involvement over time.
