The name Lakeway comes from the O'odham word "lakoda", meaning "a deep stream." The town was founded in 1882 by farmers who built a sawmill and grist mill on the confluence of Clear Fork and San Jacinto rivers. The first post office was established in 1883. A community grew up around the mills, and in 1888 a church was built. In 1913, the townspeople voted to change its name to Lakeway after General James Hogg, who had been named commander of Confederate forces during the American Civil War. In 1935, residents of nearby Fort Worth passed an ordinance forbidding discrimination against individuals because of their race or national origin in housing or other public areas within city limits. This ordinance became known as the "Lakeway non-discrimination ordinance." The ordinance has been repealed several times since it came into effect but it has never been repealed completely. Lakeway is located at (30.728383, -97.526667). It is bordered by unincorporated communities of similar names to those mentioned above: Poston and Slaughtertown east, Carthage west, White Sands south and north then Hudspeth County to the south and east; Canadian River Colony to the west; Beaumont northeast; Prairie View southeast; Onion Valley northwest . There are several small creeks running through town which give it its namesake water feature: Clear Fork Creek running through downtown followed by San Jacinto River flowing through Poston before emptying into Canadian River Colony thence finally out onto Prairie View Drive where most people live along one side or another creek while there are also some homes scattered across all six creeks with access only via one or two streets each time you get near them (for example Springdale Road goes from Creekside Park all the way down to Creekside Drive & back again). According to 2000 census data, based on population growth rates over that five-year period estimated using current demographics information available from county government [pdf file], Lakeway would have an additional 2143 residents ifAbsent any major construction projects currently scheduled for completion between now and 2020 that cause migration rates exceeding 200% due primarily to increased demand for space within existing jurisdictions...Based on projected population growth rates alone over this next 10 years we can safely assume that as much as 6000+ additional residents will move into our jurisdiction should major construction projects not occur reducing current resident populations below their present level[/pdf].

Lakeway was established in 1881, and is located in Midland County. The town of Lakeway was named for the watercourse that ran through it. It became an important railroad junction and served as a commercial center during the early years of the Texas Republic. In 1883, Texans who had been fighting in Mexicoawaited news of their brothers and sisters back at home. They convened a convention at Lakeway to create a new state, which they did on November 15th, 1883. The name Texan Statehood ceremonies were held at the same location two years later on December 6th. The town grew quickly due to its key role in the tillage and transportation industries. By 1903, there were over 1,000 residents living in Lakeway. A library was built downtown in 1907 and fireplaces were installed throughout the community until 1925 when electric lights were introduced. In 1925, Hurricane Rita struck Texas causing extensive damage to towns along the Gulf Coast including Lakeway. Aftermath assessments showed that $8 million had been spent on relief efforts alone and that many more lives could have been saved if better emergency planning capabilities had been put into place. As a result of this experience, Lakeway became one of the first communities to implement disaster management plans statewide within 24 hours after a natural disaster occurred
Lakeway grew up around the ranching and farming communities of the Midwestern United States. The area was first settled by Native Americans in pre-historic times, and appears to have been home to significant cultures even before European contact. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Lakeway were French colonists in the late 1500s. They named the area after a small creek that flowed through their holdings—the name stuck and was used for decades thereafter. In 1836, Texas pioneers, led by James K. Polk, moved into what is now Lakeway from San Antonio de Bexar County. They were looking for land to settle after Mexican forces burned down their homes on the Comanche River valley near present day San Antonio. The Polk party had also driven Mexico out of Texas two years earlier with an army campaign known as the Overland Expedition. As part of this effort, Polk founded Fort Worth in 1836 on riverbank east of downtown Dallas. The fort served as a frontier outpost and trading post until it was decommissioned in 1843 following Indian attacks that year. It played an important role during the final years of Mexican rule over Texas; when Mexico ceded control of that territory to America following its defeat at Battle of Alamo Creek, Fort Worth became one of several American military posts along the border with Mexico still remaining active under American occupation until 1898. While Fort Worth never regained its former prominence as a commercial center following its closure, it continues today as a popular tourist destination thanks to its architecture and sites such as Palace Park near downtown and Sam Houston Park across town from Arlington Cemetery.
