Lakeway is a town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Ft. Worth metropolitan area. The name Lakeway comes from a Cherokee word meaning "a place to lie down." There are several settlements along the Trinity River before it forms the border between Grimes and Tyler counties. A post office called Black Rock was established in 1881, and by 1902 it had become an incorporated town with a population of around 100 people. In 1907, Indianola was founded on land that had been given to them by white settlers as part of the Allende Purchase Agreement. In 1911, parts of Grimes County were annexed into Tyler County; however, Black Rock still remained an unincorporated community until 1912 when it became a city under the jurisdiction of Tyler County. The first school in Lakeway opened in 1915; however, it closed within two years due to financial difficulties. A new school was built and opened in 1918; this one remains operational today as First Baptist Church School District #2 (FBISD #2). On July 1st 1930 voters approved incorporation of what would become Lakeway when all but one township - Grimes - became part of Johnson County via annexation. On January 1st 1942 Lakeway became an independent municipality with its own government after much debate between residents and county officials over whether or not to secede from Johnson County due to wartime concerns about possible shortages in essential goods such as food and gasoline resources necessary for both military operations and everyday life during World War II. This decision marked a turning point for Lakeway as it would be its official name until1989 when it changed back to Johnson County after statehood occurred within that year- change which pertained specifically to Arlington Heights which then became known as Richardson Township (IATA: RJK). The post office operated at present day Black Rock until 1959 while all other local mail services were handled by Richardson Township until 1991 when they reverted back to their original location inside First Baptist Church School District #2 which continued operation until 2002 when they moved again out into their current location just outside the city limits

The town of Lakeway was laid out on a tract of land that had been donated by John Wesley Hardin. The first store in the town opened in 1877. By 1893, the population of Lakeway had swollen to over 100 people. In 1905, the Texas Railroad Company abandoned its line between Fredericksburg and San Antonio, leaving Lakeway with only a single track. The town of Lakeway experienced rapid growth during World War II due to the influx of soldiers and their families who were stationed at nearby Fort Bliss. The population reached 1,500 people by 1945. After the war, business slowed down as many residents moved away for new opportunities in Central Texas or elsewhere. However, development continued through the early 21st century with several stores opening up around town and numerous homes being built. Today, Lakeway is an active community with a growing economy and strong cultural ties to its pastimes and attractions including music festivals and swimming tournaments
