During World War II, many military personnel lived and worked here as workers for various defense industries; some continue to live here today as retirees or visiting family members. In 1951, local officials designated the town site for an agricultural research station known as Rice Research Station No. 2 (RR2). The original RR2 consisted of two buildings—the Administration Building and the Research Building—and served as headquarters for more than fifty years until it was replaced by the present Administration building in 1991. In 1984, RR2 became home to Texas A&M University's then-new Aggie Stadium which hosted several Bowl games before being moved to College Station following the football program's move there from Kyle Field near Dallas in 1998. currently used by Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and will Soon be used by UTSA football
Lakeway was founded by James H. Trimble in 1892. The town grew up around the Trimble brothers, who operated a wagon road from Georgetown to Alpine. In 1907, the Texas Railroad Commission authorized the construction of a railroad from Amarillo to Lakeway. The original track was built and opened in 1909. The town thrived until the Great Depression began in 1929. During the depression, many people left for greener pastures or moved to other towns in Texas because of difficult economic times. After the depression ended, Lakeway slowly started to recover and today is one of its most vibrant communities.
