Lake Jackson is a small, uninhabited body of water located in Zapata County, Texas. The outlet to the lake is located on FM 359 near mile marker 24.1 and it does not impound any land. The lakeshore was originally created by the construction of US-59 and its connecting roads in the early 1900s. The area around Lake Jackson has been occupied for at least 10,000 years, according to archeological evidence discovered at the site of Fort Bliss Army Depot. In 1836, General Antonio López de Santa Anna established a military post in what is now Zapata County as part of his attempt to quell uprisings against Mexican rule throughout Texas. Santa Anna named the area after himself, Lake Jackson (or Jaxxo), Spanish for "watering place." In 1897, US- 59 was constructed through Zapata County and portions of Bulverde and Medina Counties as part of an effort to improve travel and trade throughout East Texas. The highway was built along the banks of several small creeks that served as water supply sources for those living in rural areas east of Dallas/Fort Worth. One such creek became known as Lake Jackson Creek because it connected two other smaller lakes - Eagle Creek and Willow Creek - within a few miles of each other. The first traffic on US- 59 passed through what is now Zapata County on July 2nd 1898 when about 50 mail coaches traveled from Ft Worth northward along the route overland from San Antonio to Tyler before reaching their destination at Hearne Junction near present day Wichita Falls. At that time, most travelers took pathways acrosstxe upper Great Lakes watershed which included Eagle Creek crossings into Kiowa County prior to continuing their journey downriver via Willacy Fork into Denton County via Cedar Valley then Onoka River crossing into Jewett County before finally reaching Dodge City along IH 35W just south of present day Wichita Falls

Lake Jackson is a natural reservoir on the Houston-Galveston Bay area. It was formed by damming the Sabine River. The name comes from the Spanish word "jaguar" which means "wild cat." The first written mention of Lake Jackson was in 1836, when it was known as San Jacinto Creek. Today, most of the lake is within Harris County and parts are in Texas State Parks. The first Europeans to visit this area were traders traveling through present day Texas in search of new markets for their goods. They named the area San Jacinto Creek because they thought it would be a good place to store their goods since there were no rivers or other bodies of water hereabouts. In 1836, Antonio Linares set out from Galveston with sixenture men and four Spanish mules to found an outpost at what is now known as Lake Jackson on what is now its banks. Linares named his land Rancho Santa Anna after General Sam Houston's brother-in-law, Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna y Arellano (1784-1846). On November 15th, 1836, Mexican troops led by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna attacked American forces under Ulysses S Grant at San Jacinto Mission near modern day Tomball and lost 4 men killed and 8 wounded along with many supplies and equipment including cannons captured during the battle. This event helped lead to the war between Mexico and America that started two years later on April 12th, 1840 when President James K White sent a force under Colonel Stephen F Crockett into Matagorda County seeking possession of Mission San José del Rio Grande (now part of Austin). In 1845 Congress passed an act creating Padre Island off Austin's shoreline for military purposes only after Mexico withdrew from Texas following the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended Anglo-American control over Tejas Province (present day Grayson County) east of la Salle River. As part of this agreement Mexico ceded all but 2% of its territory west of la Salle River to Great Britain as well as much valuable gold mines in New Mexico Territory including Socorro Valley near Albuquerque while retaining sovereignty over East Texan lands north of la Salle River except for certain remote areas such as Camp Bowie where Americans continued to hold onto control until 1861 when they ceded all but 6 square miles to Mexicans who renamed it Bahía de las Ríos de Texán Comarca Presidencia Ocampo y Gómez upon their takeover of that region following Mexican victory in the Mexican–American War resulting in United States victory over Mexican forces at Ixmiquilán Bridge on September 14th 1862 lasting until 1865 when Baja California became part ofistritud Americana Oklahoma Territory
The first white settlers in what is now Texas arrived in the area around Lake Jackson in 1836. The region was then part of Mexico and most of the settlers were Mexican nationals. A fort was built at the mouth of the river that served as a trading post for goods coming into and out of Texas. In 1837, General Antonio López de Santa Anna organized an army to drive out the Mexican colonists from Texas. In March 1837, Santa Anna's army marched through what is now Polk County on their way to march on San Antonio. On April 14th, they reached the banks of the River Medina and began their march upriver. The Texans had been prepared for this eventuality and had stockpiled supplies in anticipation of an attack by Santa Anna's forces. On April 22nd, when Santa Ana's army reached Polk County, they found that there was no road north to allow them to march further upriver. They turned back and returned home rather than continue their offensive against Texas independenceists. After this setback, Santa Anna disbanded his army and sent it home to Mexico City.
