Lake Jackson, Texas is a census-designated place located in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. As of the 2010 census, its population was 576. The community is located on the east bank of the Colorado River, about 11 miles (17 km) northeast of downtown Mexico City. The name Lake Jackson comes from the Susquehanna River and was given to it by General Antonio López de Santa Anna as part of his gift to Mexico after their victory over Spanish forces at Buena Vista Creek on October 16, 1813. It had been proposed by Major James Bowie and Colonel George Hennepin during their march through Tamaulipas on their way to capture Vera Cruz in 1808. The town site was chosen because it would be within artillery range of both missions at Buena Vista Creek. The first permanent settler in what is now Lake Jackson was David Sibley who arrived in 1827 with his family and farmstead. He named his settlement for General José Joaquín Cárdenas y Zorrilla, 1st Marquis de la Cueva y Gurrea who had led an expedition against Texan bands near Presidio del Rio Grande on November 3, 1824. A road connecting Lake Jackson with Presidio del Rio Grande was completed in 1830. A post office called Nacogdoches was established in1832; it remained open until 1861 when it became part of Mesquite County. In 1836, Richard Moseley founded Rancho Las Brisas which covered an area that included present day Lake Jackson and parts of San Marcos County; he named it after his father-in-law Benjamin Fenton las Brisas who also owned land adjacent to San Marcos County Road 602 which served as the boundary between Rancho las Brisas and Mesquite County until 1912 when it became part of Arlington County due to changes made by Roosevelt Proclamation No 446 dated February 17, 1912 which took effect upon annexation by Dallas county In 1838 Gideon Barnes settled a claim along side Coyote Creek just north of present day town limits; Barnes named this locality Tejanco for José Antonio Tejanco y Lobato who had purchased land from Captain Fernando de la Cueva at Coyote Pass southeast of modern day lakeJackson In 1840 Fillmore & Co formed a partnership with Wm Pemberton & Co.; Fillmore & Co operated a ferry across Coyote Creek headed south past modern day town limits until 1865 when they merged into Wm Pemberton’s Navigation Company In 1850 John Wesley Powell explored southwest Wyoming country including today's Snake Mountains while traveling down Clear Fork creek below Salida Springs; he recommended that travelers travel downstream from Confluence at lower Clear Fork creek where he found water supplies affording transportation upriver to Marfa On March 25th 1870 USGS Geographic Names Committee changed Tejanco from Ryan Gulch to Irvina Lakes National Monument effective date January 14th 1971 following review by National Park Service staff under Director Robert Jourdain .
