Lake Jackson was a small, isolated community in Williamson County, Texas from the early 1800s until it was destroyed by a fire in 1884. The community developed around an eponymous lake that stretched for over a mile and was located on the banks of the San Jacinto River. The first resident of Lake Jackson is believed to be James Caldwell, who arrived there in 1836. A post office was established at the community in 1840, but it did not remain open long due to the difficulty of mailing mail. In 1845, local citizens built a gristmill on the shores of the lake with assistance from American Governor Sam Houston. The mill continued to operate until 1884 when it burned down. On July 15, 1881, residents of Lake Jackson voted to incorporate as a town under advisement from the Texas Legislature. The incorporation certificate states that "the site selected for settlement is one which has been well watered and nearly level." The town plat shows that there were only twelve homes in total when it was created and most were constructed between 1883 and 1889. As part of its development, Lake Jackson became known for its produce: apples, blueberries, grapes, strawberries, eggs and chickens were all common items sold at local farmers markets during this time period. In 1886-87 alone, some $4 million worth of crops were grown in Williamson County thanks largely to Lake Jackson's irrigation system. Local merchants also started selling canned goods and other products out of town beginning in 1890; this helped fuel increased population growth within the community over time. In 1912-13 developer Waddell Young began constructing what would become known as Old Town Creek; this area included much later additions such as Lakeside Drive and now includes downtown Lake Jackson proper as well as several surrounding neighborhoods including Midtown Park and South Elmhurst Drive NE (now I-10). It’s believed that this project was spurred by World War I attention toward Mexico City which had begun flowing into Texas after America’s entry into hostilities; property prices throughout Central America had begun skyrocketing following Mexico’s collapse following independence from Spain two years earlier By 1922/23 Councilman John Hickey had suggested building a Masonic temple near Main Street; soon afterwards construction began on what would become Southern Methodist University (SMU) - one of only three universities west of Kansas City at that time In 1927/28 oil drilling commenced beneath nearby Clear Fork Reservoir resulting inLakeJackson bursting onto national headlines when photos showed flames licking across surface waters some hundred miles away - quickly becoming dubbed “The Lighthouse Disaster” . By early 1933 efforts had halted due solely to lack funding however new leases were obtained for drill sites adjacent to Clear Fork Canal outlining plans for an even larger reservoir . Unfortunately these plans never came to fruition . Withdrawals commenced again by 1935 however finally cessation occurred with gas discovered offshore during 1936 rigs being abandoned once more .
