The history of gun targets can be traced back to 1819 when Captain James Wilkinson founded Wilkinson's Gun Club in what is now Fort Worth, Texas. At that time, guns were not commonly used in America, and only those with wealthy backers could afford to purchase firearms. However, Captain Wilkinson saw potential in this new type of target and decided to establish his own club specifically for target shooting. This was the beginning of the modern gun target industry in America. Since then, Target Clubs have popped up all over the United States – from California to New York – but Lake Jackson’s original location remains as one of the most perennially popular tourist destinations forgun enthusiasts around the world. In fact, recent reports show that there are even Target Clubs existing in Australia! The first gun target in Lake Jackson, Texas was a black Maria on Monroe Street in 1858. The next target was the Post Office building on Neches Drive in 1861. In 1865, the Union General James K. Polk shot an arrow into a tree near the old home of Judge John Fenton to celebrate his victory at Gettysburg. That year, also, Lake Jackson had its first Baptist church when Reverend Alfred Pemberton built it on Elm Street. The most recent target to be shot at by Texans is the Crosley Oil Refinery on FM 19605 near downtown in 2006.
Lake Jackson is a city in Stephens County, Texas, United States. The population was 10,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The city was founded by John Pemberton and named for his sister, Sarah Goodnight. The first store in Lake Jackson opened on March 15, 1881. A post office was established in 1895 and remained until it closed in 1936. The first school opened in 1896 and it remains open to this day as the only public school within the city limits today. In 1899, James Hance became the first mayor of Lake Jackson with a term that spanned from 1899-1902. In 1902, James Hance was impeached and replaced by Wirt Hinton who served as mayor until 1917 when he resigned due to illness. In 1922, Lake Jackson became anindependent municipality with its own council and government which lasted until 1935 when it merged back into Stephens County under statehood legislation. After becoming an independent municipality again in 1935, Lake Jackson increased its population rapidly through annexation of surrounding townships over time such as Clear Creek (1941), Willowbrook (1949), Maple Ridge (1963), Prosperous (1976) and Cedar Park (1981). As a result of its rapid growth rate during this time period,LakeJackson also reached its current population size by 1980 with 10,811 residents living within city boundaries alone

Lake Jackson was named for General John C. Smith, who explored its area in 1836. The site of the present day town of Lake Jackson was first settled by Anglos in the early 1800s. In 1839, a company of Texans named the Texas Rangers moved from San Antonio to Fort Worth and began roaming the country. They discovered this fertile land around Lake Jackson and decided to settle here. The town of Lake Jackson started off as a small ranching community. By 1910, it had grown into a large city with over 50,000 residents. The city was destroyed in an air raid on December 6th, 1945, but it soon rebuilt and became one of the most important cities in Texas again. Today, LakeJackson is known for its beautiful scenery and rich history
Lake Jackson was formed by the join of two smaller lakes, the Red and White. The name comes from the Spanish word "jaguar" which means "to cross." The first white settlers in this area were Texans who arrived in 1836. They named their new land Lake Jackson after General James K. Polk, the 33rd president of the United States.
