In 1876, James Mosely founded a small trading post at what is now called Westlake Village on the banks of the Colorado River near modern-day Lake Jackson. Mosely's trading post became known as "Mosesville" because he named it for his father Moses who had been born in Ireland and died there before arriving here in 1836 with his family. Lamar Hunt Ranch was established about two miles upstream from Moseley's post by Captain John Wesley Smith and later by George Waco with help from Jesse Ferguson, Sr., one of Lamar Hunt's sons-in-law. In 1890, Hunt sold his ranch to Jethro Tinsley for $10 per acre ($2 million today). From this point forward it would be known as Tinsley Ranch (later ironically renamed IHOP). At its peak circa 1915-1920 its population numbered 460 people including 160 men working on cattle ranches out of 16 Hogg & Co graveyards close by; HH Slaughter gristmill operated nearby until 1941 when it burned down; numerous businesses were built along FM 1463 over time such as a general store/barber shop/canned goods depot (1914), a clothing store (1915), physician' s office (1916), grocery store/laundry services (1927) and more typical ranchera type buildings such as corrals(1920s) or adobe huts.(30s) The last store building actually predates FM 1463 which opened up just south of townsite about 1930; however even pre-FM 1463 there were several businesses functioning around town site: blacksmith(1890), photographer(1892), dentist(1896), bakery( 1899), hotel( 1902 ), barbershop/rendezvous hall( 1909 ), Masonic Temple No 2-( 1907 ), saloon/( 1912 ),[?] bank.( 1913 ) among others
Lake Jackson was founded in 1836 by Major General Antonio L. Armijo and his wife, Maria de la Luz Armijo. The town was named for the river that flows through it. In 1851, the first school in the area was opened and in 1870, a Presbyterian church was built. The town saw some growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s as cotton plantations were developed around it. However, Lake Jackson's population dwindled after World War II as many people left to find work in nearby Houston or Dallas. Today, the town is home to a small amount of population and few businesses.
