Although annexation by Arlington Heights followed in 1980, annexation by McKinney never happened because McKinney's city officials did not want their annexed into Arlington Heights until after they bought land from Humble Oil Company for a new industrial park which would have included a refinery and other facilities on it. Today, little remains of Lake Jackson other than some foundations and private homes scattered throughout its fertile agricultural land. However, its history is still highly prized by many Texans who visit its natural beauty or admire its unique architecture.
Lake Jackson, Texas was formed by the joining of two smaller streams. The first stream, the Itzaalitchee River, was named after a Spanish navigator who discovered the area in 1541. The second stream, the Arkansas River, was named for General Sam Houston.
