Lake Jackson, also known as the Great Lakes District, is a census-designated place in Taylor County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,719 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The Lake Jackson community was founded in 1854 by John Quesnel and his wife Anna Boatwright on what is now US 77. In 1865, they named their new town after General Sam Houston because he had been instrumental in helping to found it. After Sam Houston's death in 1836, his widow married James Fenton and the town became known as Fentonville. In 1907, the name of the town was changed to Lake Jackson because of its location on a major body of water called the Great Lakes District. On April 15, 1959 it again received its original name when its streams were combined to form Lake Jackson Creek. The first post office opened in this community on December 1, 1908. The current post office building was built in 1959 and replaced an earlier structure that dated back to 1876. Lake Jackson, located in Johnson County, Texas, was named for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' 1st District's stations at the mouth of the Arkansas River and its confluence with Jacksons Creek. The area had been surveyed by Captain John Fenton in 1836 and it was along this creek that General Santa Anna's forces under Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna fought their way upriver to Mexico City in 1848. When Texas acquired its independence from Mexico on November 12,1845, General Sam Houston appointed Colonel James Fannin as its first governor. In January 1846 Major General Stephen Austin ordered Fannin to march his army downriver to attack Mexican resistance at San Jacinto. On January 17th, while still 10 miles from San Jacinto, Austin's force met Mexican cannon fire and retreated without engaging the enemy. As a result of this engagement some 6 Texans were killed and 26 wounded; all three generals involved received military honors for their bravery. The Goliad Dam was completed downstream from Lake Jackson in 1951 and has since been a major source of irrigation water for Johnson County. The dam also forms part of the main stem of the Brazos River which scenic drives around Johnson County offer spectacular views across much of central Texas
The first European to visit the area was Francisco Vázquez de Coronado in 1541. The first permanent settler in what is now Lake Jackson was Juan Seguín, who founded a small town named San Marcos on the banks of the Trinity River in 1795. In 1836, General Sam Houston drove Mexican forces out of Texas and established the Republic of Texas, which included parts of today's Texas. The following year, Texans seceded from Mexico and formed their own government, becoming known as the Lone Star State.
