Lake Jackson, Texas is a small city located in Liberty County, Texas. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. The town of Lake Jackson was founded by families from Tennessee in 1874. The first post office in the town was established in 1875 and named for General James K. Polk. In 1907, the towns of Cedar Hill and Hondo were combined to form Lake Jackson, creating a single municipality with a population of 10,000. The city elected its first mayor on November 3, 1909 and adopted its first municipal ordinance on December 5 that stated "It is hereby decreed that all persons living within the limits of this City are citizens thereof." Lake Jackson experienced economic decline during World War II because much of the local production for munitions came from nearby Corpus Christi. However, since then it has become an important center for trade and commerce in Liberty County. The downtown area has been renovated several times over the years including a $25 million renovation completed in 2009 which included new streets, sidewalks and public buildings such as the library/theatre complex which previously functioned as storage barracks for local marines. The town of Houston was founded on the bank of this river in 1836. In 1845, General Antonio López de Santa Anna laid siege to Fort Bend County and starvation began to eat away at the Texans’ morale. A relief force under Colonel James K. Polk arrived too late and Santa Anna took control of Fort Bend County, which became an independent republic within Mexico. The Texan forces then invaded Mexico again and pushed out the Mexicans from Texas for good in 1846.
