The town was founded in 1879 by Creator John Fenton and James A. Greer as a community on the banks of Buffalo Bayou. In 1902, it was renamed Lake Jackson after General MacArthur's army passed through Hudspeth County on their way to fight in World War I. The city annexed the neighboring town of Willacy in 1923 and its population increased to 2,500 by 1930. Lake Jackson, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The name Lake Jackson comes from General Sam Houston's Battle of San Jacinto which took place on April 6, 1836 near present day League City. The battle was fought during the Mexican-American War and resulted in the death of 2,000 American soldiers and civilians. In 1881, James Fenton established an sawmill on the east side of the lake. In 1905, Johnnie Hargrave built a cotton gin and planter’s cottage on what is now SW corner Cook Rd and Elm St., just north of HWY 35/US 59 intersection. From here he made several successful loans to farmers in nearby Round Rock and Hudspeth Counties for raising cotton. In 1911 Mr. Hargrave donated land to form Bradley Park with a dam to impound excess water from Clear Fork River that fed into Lake Jackson reservoir; this park features a playground and athletic fields as well as a large pond used for fishing by locals and visitors alike today
Lake Jackson was formed in 1836 when the Trinity River rose to create a large body of water between the Edwards Plateau and the Gulf Coast. The area that is now Lake Jackson was at one time part of Mexico. In 1836, President James K. Polk ordered US Army General Don Carlos Bueso to take possession of the land east of the Trinity River and form a new colony called Fort Bend County. The primary purpose of this colony was to control trade between Texas and Mexico. However, many Texans did not like this idea because they saw it as another example of US government involvement in their state. This led to a series of skirmishes between the United States forces and Mexican troops over control of this new colony. Eventually, on July 26, 1837, US General Santa Anna ordered Bueso to withdraw his colonists from Fort Bend County and return them back to Mexico. Adams County was created from these former colonies on September 1, 1837.
