However, during this time of prosperity, crime rates rose to alarming levels and by 1960 LaPorte had become one of Texas' most blighted cities. However, through hard work and dedication to community service projects such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and Habitat for Humanity (HA), LaPorte has since begun to turnaround - becoming an economically vibrant city that continues to grow into the 21st century.
In 1853, La Porte was founded by James H. Bowen and his wife, Rachel M. Bowen. It became a small town with a population of around seventy people in the mid-19th century. The first post office was opened in La Porte in 1856. The townspeople built a courthouse and other buildings between 1861 and 1865. In 1881, the Lubbock & Western Railway arrived in La Porte, helping to expand the agricultural economy of the area. During World War II, LaPorte served as an Army airfield for bomber pilots from nearby Fort Worth Air Field. After the war ended, the community developed into a commercial center with several large businesses including Jardine Wagon Wheel tire company and Bridgeport Steel Company. In the early 21st century,La Porte has experienced significant growth as it becomes an attraction for tourists and professionals alike due to its proximity to Dallas/Fort Worth Airport and its many cultural attractions such as museums, arts galleries, restaurants and nightlife options
