La Porte is named for General James Hogg (1792-1868), who fought against Mexico during the Mexican-American War. The first permanent settlers in what would become La Porte were three men from Kentucky, Count Ferdinand de Lesseps (1804-1883) and his brother Don Carlos de Lesseps (1807-1885) arrived on July 12, 1838. They founded the town on land that they had purchased from Major John A. Sibley at an auction held by Colonel Jesse Benton two months earlier. The Bentons were later joined by other pioneers including Captain David Cline ( 1840 - 1911 ), Lieutenant George Wickersham ( 1851 - 1917 ) and Lieutenant Augustus Roecker ( 1852 - 1913 ). On October 8, 1839, Captain Cline married Anna Maria resident of nearby Palestine but five days after their wedding AnnaMaria died due to fever contracted while attending her wedding feast at home which she certainly could not have known about as she was still pregnant with her future husband's child! In 1840 Captain Cline built a log cabin near present day Cline Elementary School. In 1844 he donated land to build a courthouse and jail which became known as "The Old Courthouse". In 1850 La Porte incorporated as a village under the name of Palestine under then Mayor Isaac Capps Jr.. The first post office opened in La Porte on December 3rd, 1850 with Elisha Beall serving as its first Postmaster On February 15th 1861 Confederate Brigadier General Robert Mosely occupied Fort Worth without warning or provocation and burned all buildings within one block of Main Street thus starting what would be called "The Battle Of Fort Worth" On November 15th 1865 Union General James Hogg arrived at Fort Worth with 5 companies of cavalry to take over command from Confederate General Austin Blair following Blair's withdrawal from Texas military presence in response to orders from President Abraham Lincoln ordering him to desert his troops under cover of darkness Hogg's forces destroyed most of Blair's mounted artillery pieces outside City Hall before besieging and routing him soundly inside within hours giving rise to popular legend that "Hogg & His Horsemen rode into downtown Ft worth like conquerors!" Aftermath: Many stores were looted; more than 20 people killed

It became an important economic center due to its location on the Brazos River and its role as a supply stop for travelers going northward through Mexico into United States. In 1846, during the Mexican-American War, La Porte was captured by Mexican forces and taken back to Mexico City. However, because LaPorte was within U.S.-controlled territory at the time, it remained in American hands until January 1st of that year when it reverted back to Mexican control
La Porte County was created in 1876 and named for the town of LaPorte, Indiana. The county seat was moved to Amarillo in 1907.
