La Porte, Texas is a small town located in Webb County, Texas. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. La Porte was founded on August 26, 1857 by John Blythe and his bride Anna. The town was named for General James Buchanan LaPorte who fought in the Mexican-American War. La Porte is located on FM 1960. The first post office in LaPorte was established on November 3, 1859 by J.Blythe and A.Drake with the name of Lone Star Post Office. On July 1, 1860, the post office changed its name to LaPorte and remained that way until it merged into Webb County on January 1, 1907. The first school in LaPorte was Highland School which opened in 1865 under the guidance of Mrs Hildebrandt and taught grades one through fourrens until it merged into Lamar Consolidated High School on September 9th of that year also under the guidance of Mrs Hildebrandt. In 1905/06 Highland School became part of Lamar Consolidated High School but continued to teach grades five through eight until it merged into Will Rogers High School on February 25th of that year also under the guidance of Mrs Hildebrandt (see below). On January 1st 1907 Webb County formed from portions of Comal County including parts of Hill Country which included parts of Lamar Consolidated High School which left Highland Schools operation continuing as an open enrollment school for grades nine through twelve with Mr Fenton taking over as headmaster starting fall term 1907-08 while all other staff members were transferred to Will Rogers High School when it opened its doors to students in 1909-10 In 1912/13 HS Alamo closed due to budget cuts so classes were offered only half day every weekdays instead during lunchtime instead giving parents more time off work to feed their children
