La Porte is a small town in the county of Tarrant, Texas, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Fort Worth–Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name La Porte comes from Spanish words meaning "bridge over the river" and it was founded by Hernando de Soto in 1763 as a trading post on his journey from Mexico City to Texas. La Porte grew rapidly after Mexican independence in 1821 and by 1836 it had a population of 2,500. The post office closed in 1896 but the community kept growing until 1959 when it lost its charter because of lack of growth. In 1961 LaPorte became an unincorporated community and has since remained that way with few changes other than its ZIP code (76016). The local school district operates public schools which include government-run high schools (grades 9-12) as well as alternative education programs such as magnet schools and private academies. In addition to its school districts, La Porte also includes one military base which provides services to members of the Army Reserve Corps stationed there; two hospitals; one movie theater; three convenience stores; one restaurant; and two churches. LaPorte is located about 19 miles west of downtown Fort Worth on I-10 exit 258A near milepost 249. It lies within Tarrant County east of Arlington County on Interstate 10 just south of US-69/US-635 exit 259B/I-10exit 260A/US-69 exit 259B/. According to the 2010 census, LaPorte's population has grown steadily since 2000 reaching 2,965 people living in 596 households using an online application for tax assessment data reported through 2011 census data (latest available). This growth rate outpaces all other communities within this zip code including nearly every other populated place with more than 1000 residents within that decade including: Grapevine (1,711), Richardson (1,971), Irving (2,624), Garland (2 668), McKinney (2 829) & Donnybrook Heights(2 917).

On July 6, 1861, a group of Mexican rebels attacked American forces at Fort Buena Vista and began firing upon the townspeople. A large crowd soon gathered around the fort, demanding that President Abraham Lincoln come to help them protect their homes and people from what they saw as an Americaninvasion. After a few hours of fighting, American forces regained control over Fort Buena Vista and enabled La Porte to stay neutral during the Civil War
