La Porte, Texas is a small town in Atascosa County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. La Porte is located on TX Highway 121 about 10 miles (16 km) northeast of the larger city of Odessa. The earliest settlers in LaPorte were led by John Love who arrived in 1836 from Illinois. He started a small general store and post office in what is now the town core. In 1840, he married Susana de la Garza and they founded a cotton plantation called "Love's Land". The couple had four children: Julia Ann (1841-1920), James Love (1843-1924), Mary Jane (1846-1925), and Alfreda Belle Love (1848-1945). They also raised hogs and pigs on the plantation until it was sold to Wm Hogg in 1865 for $1,000 cash. In 1868 Jno Love built a log cabin near present day First Baptist Church which served as their home until 1906 when they moved to their current location. The log cabin still stands today and is used as a museum by the local historical society. Lena Logan became known as the "Queen of LaPorte" for her many accomplishments during her lifetime including being an officer in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War; serving as mayor of La Porte from 1901 to 1905; running for county judge in 1912 but losing to incumbent Sam Rayburn; and later becoming deputy director of public Welfare under Governor Perryman before retiring in 1969. One of the earliest types of gun magazine was the primitiveribbon magazine which was invented by George Washington in 1785. This type of magazine consisted of strips of cloth wound around a drum that could be drawn up to hold rounds (or sometimes just crude spikes). The La Porte settlement was founded in 1836 by Captain John S. Worth, a surveyor and Texas landowner. The town was named for the port of La Rochelle, France. In 1838, Worth built the first permanent structure in La Porte: a log cabin which he used as his home and office until 1840. By 1850, La Porte had a population of about fifty-five people. In 1851, General Sam Houston purchased 640 acres of land in present-day LaPorte County from Captain John S. Worth for $1,500. This purchase established Houston's claim to the area that would later become LaPorte County. Houston's donation also future Texas Governor James Kenedy's claim to part of this same property. In 1861, Colonel James Hogg organized the First Mexican American War Regiment at Fort Myer in Arlington Heights. This regiment served under General Antonio López de Santa Anna and fought at San Jacinto on October 6th and 7th of that year against Ulysses S Grant's Union army under the command of Major General Winfield Scott. On November 3rd of that year (1861), President Andrew Johnson issued Executive Order No 4771 which ordered all Confederate forces within nine miles (14 kilometers) of Dallas be operationally disbanded or turned over to Union control without battle or surrendering any arms or munitions whatsoever; this order applied equally to Mexico City as well as Austin and other occupied cities within those boundaries. On January 1st 1865 (a day after Confederate States Constitution seceded from the United States), Captain Albert Ayer surrendered all duties connected with naval operations at Galveston Bay to Commodore Matthew Perry Mason on board USS Perry during their subsequent raid upon Galveston Island; Mastership over these waters passed thenceforth solely unto Commodore Mason who placed himself therein officially under military jurisdiction with specific instructions to harass no Spanish vessels afloat anywhere near Galveston Bay notwithstanding any protest thereto taken by Captains Ayer or his boatsmen while they were detained therein by Commodore Mason pursuant to said orders...Ayer being then put into jail on board Perry where he remained until released by Commodore Mason on parole December 12th...Ayers' imprisonment having been occasioned merely because he refused an order from Commodore Mason not to detain Spanish vessels near Galveston Bay notwithstanding such protest...Ayers should have been immediately set free upon arriving back aboard Perry since his detention did nothing but harass innocentSpanish Vessels taking refuge thereunder simply because he refused an order from Commodore Mason!
