The first Europeans to come to La Porte were Hudsons Bay Company traders in 1827-28. In 1830, Spanish missionaries came to La Porte from San Antonio and started a mission there. Another sawmill was built here in 1861 by James Hogg for his father-in-law, Nathan Hogg; it became an agricultural fairgrounds and community center after Hogg bought it out from its previous owner. In 1907, the first school opened in La Porte when Sarah Ladd McCrary donated land for one; it served as the town's first school until 1915 when a new high school was constructed nearby. After World War II ended, many manufacturing jobs moved out of America into Europe during the postwar recession – including those at Anheuser Busch brewery – so much so that by 1951 only 2% of La Porte residents still worked within industry compared with nearly half that number nationwide. The last major factory operation left LaPorte between 1957 and 1961 when Schlumberger shut down their Cedar Falls refinery there because they could not compete with foreign companies pricing their products cheaper than American brands like Chevrolets and Pontiacs on world markets A shopping mall opened up near downtownLaPorte in 1993 which included anchor stores such as Sears & Roebuck along with smaller independent stores before being replaced by Walmart expansion plans prior to its opening which caused significant economic decline for local businesses around 2003 Finally since 2007 through 2012 redevelopment efforts have been ongoing primarily focused on redeveloping portions of downtownLaPorte into mixed use[1] while also increasing access to transportation options via light rail/bus rapid transit lines which now serve most neighborhoods inside or adjacent to downtownLaportE
