The city was founded in 1881 by James Bowie and his brother John as the site of a new town on the Brazos River. At that time, ammunition was an important factor in the development of La Porte, as it was one of the few ways to protect civilian businesses from Indians who raids occurred during this period. The first gunsmith in La Porte was George Weiser, who built what is now known as Weiser Armory on Main Street in 1884. This revolver-making business became well known for its quality products and blade-wielding employees. In 1896, Austin Riggs purchased Weiser's business and continued operations until his death in 1951. In 1898, Lamar Advertising Company began publishing "Action Magazine" which enjoyed success until 1925 when it merged with Hearst Publications Incorporated to form Hearst Corporation. From then on, "Action Magazine" became "LaPorte American Rifleman". During World War I (1914-1918), ammunition production increased significantly due to patriotism and demand from both the military and civilians. The war provided an opportunity for munitions companies to expand their product lines and increase profits; however, many munitions plants were destroyed or damaged during World War I. After the war ended there was renewed interest in munitions production throughout America because of postwar prosperity and technological innovation; however, these advancements did not entirely replace traditional firearms manufacturing methodsologies such as explosives production or GUNMETALurgy (a process that makes coins out of metal). Although production declined slightly following World War II due to subsequent recessionary conditions across most industries (#1 being coal mining but also including numerous other sectors), La Porte saw a resurgence in Ammunition Manufacturing between 1962-1972 when private investment allowed for new plant construction (#2 being JB Weld Gun Factory). The current arsenal has been operational since 1978 thanks to investments by local businessmen Jerry Dunn (1981) & Ted Haggerty (1982).
